"This band are so good at what they do, it's a shame more people don't know this. And here are two more high energy emotive hardcore blasts on this Council released 7". First up is "Brand the Lions Mouth" with it's urgent and driven guitars. Spencer's vocals are yelled with a huge sense of passion, and musically it is more in the vein of something like Torches to Rome than their previous efforts, especially in the sound of the guitars. It's pretty quickfire and over almost too soon. I love the b-side, "Coda Q", which also has a very Mike Kirsch feel to it. One of the other members of the band joins in for vocals on this to great effect. It starts off with a big thick groove that pours things on. As the song develops it grows into a repetitious tune with a fantastic melodic groove and it latches on - the extra vocals really come to the fore hear as it descends into a tumultuous emo finale with yelled and cried vocals tangling together. "In Vain was an emo/hardcore band, active in the mid 1990s.
They released a demo cassette, a self-titled 7”, a split 7” with Council of Five Nations, a split 7” with Piebald and had a song on the Youth Power Records compilation 7” .
Their sound was comparable to better-known bands such as Current and Native Nod.
They had a throbbing bass sound with a squealing guitar sound, that was broken up in parts with arpeggios and creative walking basslines that were a staple of the emo sound.

The first time I heard this record it blew my mind. How could some songs about rice get me so fired up? They could have been singing about anything...it's the energy in the songs, the ideas. Fuck, Rice is amazing! They were the future...apparently they played a few shows recently (Rop being the only original of the 90's members) The songs on this 7" seem to differ slightly from the versions on the "Fuck You This Is Rice" discography Lookout released. The "Banned From Gilman (95)" 7 inch was excluded from that discography, probably due to the low quality of the recording. I've included that as well in a separate link. It's one solid track and as I mentioned above the sound quality is quite poor...but enjoyable if Rice is your thing. There's a Rice blog here.

So for most of the time since the last post I've been living in the Sequoia National Park. During the summer I was working at a place called Bearpaw. It's in the backcountry. The fastest way to get there is to hike out 11 miles which takes most people anywhere from 4 to 7 hours. All of our supplies and stuff were brought in on pack mules. Everything ran on propane no electricity. We all (me and the 4 other employees) lived in tents. Needless to say it was amazing!! I cant wait to go back.

This deer was always hanging out by my tent. I think she was going blind, her eyes were kinda milky and her face was all messed up.

I should be posting fairly regularly now, I feel like I need to catch up. Bad news is I sold about 90% of my records during rough times a couple of months ago. You might still be able to get some of what I considered to be a portion of my life at the Amoeba on Haight in SF. I regret it but fuck sometimes that's the way it goes...

This is one solid track (sorry) I'd break it down but I'm not sure of all the song titles. A couple of these songs were on the split with Bleed. I've really wanted to post this ever since the realization that most of these songs aren't on the CD Ebullition just released. These are great songs...I guess they feel otherwise.
It was great seeing them play at Gilman. There seemed to be a lot of younger kids there that were really into them.

*None Left Standing was an early 90’s hardcore punk/emo band from Madison, Wisconsin. Often sighted among the first bands of the emo genre, None Left Standing took influence from the D.C. post-hardcore groups Fugazi, Embrace, Rites of Spring and Jawbox as well as contemporaries Falling Forward, Gauge and Lincoln.

Starting with the core of the disbanded sXe “Business As Usual”, Tim Burton, Matthew Mangan and Jason Gnewikow (The Promise Ring) joined with Nathan Greer forming None Left Standing to continue with musical growth and a conscious message. Dynamic music, explosive live shows and a cassette demo earned None Left Standing an underground reputation as “the band to see”, even though a limited East-Coast tour was all they had under their belt. Just as the 7-inch record “Laura” was being released, Nathan was replaced with Patrick Hotlen. None Left Standing toured the East-Coast again playing shows to welcoming crowds of dedicated hardcore fans. While on this tour they were invited to perform at the famed “More The Music Fest II” in Dayton, OH, with such noteable bands as Avail, Split Lip (Chamberlain), and The Delta 72. None Left Standing recorded the “Stingray Candy 100” CD/LP in the Winter of 1995 and played their final show to a large host of friends at “The Whole” in Minneapolis,MN. Bootleg videos and tape trading continues for this gone but not forgotten band from Wisconsin.

Suiciety were from Fort Worth, Texas... that's about all I know and I got that from the back of the record! The music is a little slower than usually prefered but this for some reason really tickles my fancy. On the insert the lyrics are in English and Spanish. I've always liked that for some reason, when lyric sheets have multiple translations. It's a quick one, just two songs. I'm not sure what year this came out. I'm guessing '92 or '93.

At least on this CD they're kinda clumped together compared to being one good one, one crappy one, one good one etc... It's such a bummer when a really good band goes to shit but keeps the same name even though their sound has completely changed. At least the good side went on to form Chain of Strength.

When I first heard Current I didn't really care for them, I remember thinking "eh... they're alright" but the more I listened they started to grow on me. As time went on I became quite interested in a lot of the records Council put out, some of which I still seek to hear. Council Records was started by members of Current. The history is here. I like this record. The packaging is a brown bag with the art and info printed on it. I love shit like that, to me that kind of stuff is so much better than some slick high cost production that looks like every other crappy record. Ahhh....'94 maaaan.

Listen to it and come back with your thoughts on it.
I suck at trying to describe what a record sounds like because I hate pigeonholing things. They are what they are, but I know descriptions help as far as trying to figure out if it's something you even want to spend time checking out.

Yaphet Kotto is an amazing band in my opinion. They kinda remind me of a more raw sounding Ordination of Aaron. I don't think I really need to try to describe them too much as most people that are into this flavor of sound have probably heard them by now. Members are/were also in Look Back And Laugh, Never Healed, Moralyson, and Saviours.

I don't know too much about these guys but this is a great record. There's even some backup vocals by Martin from Los Crudos. When I tried to get a little more info all I got was a different Scorched Earth Policy that's around today, at least I hope its a different one... otherwise they really went to shit. I know that's not the case though, it's obviously a different band. If there's anyone with any info on these guys please contribute, thanks.

This was released by Bloodlink and I think it's suppose to be a discography of sorts but it's not complete. I know the song on the XXX comp. is not there and the songs on the Yuletide 7" are different recordings...I think. They sound different to me... (I just listened to the 7" again and it's the same, it's just the sound quality is better on the CD.)

Whenever I listen to this CD I can't help but think of when I broke my leg and had to drive myself to the hospital. I was listening to this the whole time. I think I was listening to it for about a week straight at that point actually. I had just gotten it and was playing the shit out of it. I remember being stoked because broken leg = time off work. Fuck work.

I love this record. The music is great and so is the packaging. It's cut out and glued together by hand, and lots to read. I love shit like this. Flashbulb Memory are my favorite on here. Great melodic hardcore. I am curious if there's more that these guys put out? Apparently the Joshua Fit for Battle side is a live recording. I just found that out after trying to get a little more info about this release. It doesn't really sound live...to me anyway.

This is a pretty cool record, the sleeve is hand printed. This makes the name rather self explanatory.

This record was a compilation in memory of the late Christopher Horne. Apparently this kid touched the hearts and minds of a lot of folks. It seems the good ones always go early...

Statue was formed after Alex Bareto and Chris Bratton branched out from their band Chain of Strength. On Filter The Infection, they take the emotion and anger present in Chain of Strength and infuse it with the sound of mid-80’s Dischord bans Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Fugazi.

Alex & Chris from Chain Of Strength put forward a project that leans much closer to the Dischord sound of the mid 80's as opposed to the Minor Threat influenced Chain. The presence of early post hardcore DC bands' influence doesn't stifle their own energy. Track down the "Something To Say" demo, later released on Ambassador Records under the name Statue, this demo predates Filter The Infection and is the bridge between that release and their days in Chain Of Strength.

This one seemed to have disappeared from the list of available Ebullition records rather quickly. I would really like to get my hands on any other recordings by Gadje (if there are any). There's something about them that really gets me going. The only other song I have by them is "Sleep" that was on the Food Not Bombs comp. that Element Records put out...I should post that too that's a good one. I have a couple Ice Nine records that should end up on here eventually as well.

Ordination of Aaron were a short-lived band from Kalamazoo, MI. They were around from 1993 to 1995. They toured the east coast, midwest & south during the hot summer of 94 but mostly kept close to their native Michigan and surrounding states inc Canada. In their lifetime, Ordination of Aaron has released a s/t 7" on Bloodlink Records, a split 7" with Indian Summer & a acoustic 7" on Inchworm Records and a s/t LP on Council Records. They have also appeared on the We've Lost Beauty compilation (File 13), All The President's Men compilation (Old Glory), and Amnesia compilation (Ebullition). All of this has been compiled on a discography CD released by Arcade Kahca entitled "Complete Works". Unfortunately all are now out of print... -taken from the Ordination of Aaron Myspace page

I think I might post the We've Lost Beauty comp. soon, this made me think of it and reminded me of how good it is.

Wardance Orange were from Richmond, VA with members from Avail, Dayspring, Grip, Action Patrol, and The Episode. As I started to look into this release it turns out it's still available from a few places... No Idea has some so does Spiral Objective. Also, word on the street is there will be a discography coming out this year from Fist City Records. Get that shit!

Frame Work #2

Campaign, Man is the Bastard, Factory, Scapegrace.
This is a great comp. I got really excited when I found this one. I've always been a fan of Campaign and Half Man. I think It's Chris Jensens vocals, he just sounds so pissed. Man is the Bastard is one of my all time favorites up until when the actual music was less and less and noise was taking over. Some of their songs were so fucking awesome. Then towards the end they kinda just turned into a headache. Factory I had never heard of until this comp. members have been in a ton of other bands...Life's Blood, Limp Wrist, Intent, Hail Mary, Conniption. I'm sure there's probably more than that too. Scapegrace were from Smithtown, NY they had a split with Conniption and released two 7 inches (one on Frame Work and one on Luddite).

I first heard Ipecac through the song they had on the Amnesia comp. that Ebullition put out a long time ago. In my opinion it's their best song. I included it in the file with the Tomato Tomåto 7". The recording quality is kinda bad but over all it's still a great record.

El Dopa grew out of the drug and crime infested ghettos of West and North Oakland in 1995. San Francisco's East Bay, including Berkeley and Oakland,
is like a punk rock mecca for some. From the local bars, crappy venues, and house parties in slumlord owned punk houses, a number of legendary
underground bands have risen. Some, Neurosis for example, have become leaders and respected examples of artistic integrity and dedication. Those who
have used the status and activity of the scene as a starting point for major label careers, like Green Day and Rancid, are looked upon largely as sellouts and
traitors. Many, like El Dopa, shine bright before quickly burning up in the atmosphere.

The all-star lineup -- former Grimple member Greg on guitar and vocals, Econochrist's Andy on bass, former Product member Brian on guitar and vocals,
and Shawn on drums -- remained unchanged for the duration of El Dopa's existence. In early 1996 the band recorded their first effort, a self-titled 7" EP,
for the reputable underground label Prank. The release of the EP was followed up with a brief tour of the Northwestern United States as openers for Neurosis
and Bloodlet. The 7" was well received, and the band quickly gained appreciation and a growing following in the Bay Area and throughout the underground
punk scene.

Also in 1996, crazy scene photographer Murray Bowles put up some cash to start a new record label in the East Bay. Dubbed East Bay Menace, the label was
run with the guidance of Rachel and former Strychnine and Filth member Lenny. Prank were broke and unable to put out a full-length El Dopa album until
later on, but the band felt ready to record as soon as possible and tour more extensively. Lenny, being fairly narrow minded and puritanical in his punk ethics,
thought that El Dopa's sound was too metal influenced, and was opposed to releasing their full-length record. Once Rachel managed to convince him it was an
important record that they should put out, the budget he was willing to offer the band for recording was too small. While it might have been an adequate sum
for the mediocre recording quality tolerated by much of the punk scene, the members of El Dopa wanted to work with respected producer Billy Anderson
(Melvins, Neurosis). After much wrangling and pressure from Rachel, a deal was struck and the album was recorded and was released in early 1997.
Soon after the release of the full-length album, the band headed out on a two month tour of North America. While setting up for a show at the Rat in Boston,
bass player Andy was told that someone had called the club and was asking for "Andy from El Dopa." Confused as to who might know where to find him, he
picked up the phone and discovered that the caller was looking for a different Andy, who played in a different, Boston-based El Dopa. Apparently, the other
El Dopa were regular performers at the Rat. There were a few other incidents during the tour when one or two random people showed up at a gig hoping to see
this mysterious second El Dopa. The band found it funny until they returned home to learn that cease and desist notices had been sent to both of their record
labels.

The group decided to deal with the problem by changing their name to 1332, but for most fans, the band remains El Dopa. In 1998, 1332 broke up amidst
various personal problems, reuniting for a few shows in early 2001. Greg is rumored to be preparing to play shows with a new band, Brian went on to join
East Bay heavy doom/punk rockers Cruevo on guitar, while Shawn played briefly with San Francisco's Men of Porn and appeared on that band's second album.

This is another one of those records that makes me think of skateboarding. Every time I hear it I picture myself skating in the parking lot behind Santana H.S. around '94-'95ish. My friend Scooter got me into these guys along with a ton of other great hardcore bands. Thanks Daryl.

These guys were from Santee, CA
They released another record that a friend of mine once had and I was lucky enough to get a cassette copy of it. Unfortunately that crapped out several years ago (Probably like ten). I can't seem to find that one anywhere. Apparently after this some members went on to form a band called Dahmers Diner. That's another one I'm on the look out for. It seems that living in San Diego I would come across it sooner or later...so now I wait...

Listening to this reminds me of skateboarding all day & night in Santee and in the surrounding crappy towns. It was always so fucking hot, even at night. Man, those were the days. Living off of Top Ramen sandwiches and .59 cent Crapo Bell burritos.
